Being the Change

Last week, whether you were on the winter retreat or if you came to class, we learned how important it is that we do what we can to help all of our neighbors (everyone in the world). The sad reality is that far too many people in the world can't even provide the most basic needs for themselves. We learned that there are things such as physical poverty and spiritual poverty, and often times, those who suffer from spiritual poverty are more often than not those who are wealthy (people like us...)

We learned that one of the ways we can become less spiritually impoverished is by being satisfied with "enough." In your own words, explain how being satisfied with "enough" may not only make us less spiritually impoverished, but also help those who are physically impoverished.
Why is it our responsibility to do what we can to help the poor and the hungry? Reflecting upon what poverty is and how God expects us to do something about it, what can you do personally to "be the change" in the world to help the marginalized whether they present themselves to you wither locally or globally?

  1. God helps us to realize that there are many people not as fortunate as us and we need to step up to the plate and act on it. he expects us to do things for the poor because it is in our hearts to do it. we are responsible for helping them because we have the power to. locally we can help by doing "Nothing But Nets".

  2. being satisfied with what we have will show that we are not greedy and selfish. if we take everything that we have but dont really need and give it to those who have nothing, will help both of us out. its our job to help the ones in need because if that was us we would want them to help. we are lucky to have what we have and most of the time we take it for granted. if we take a step into the less fortunate's shoes we would get a good look at how hard life really is and we would learn that you have to work for what you want and not just think that everything is handed to you. its unfortunate that not everyone is living the goood life, but thats reality and we have to learn to live with what life hands us and try to expect less than more.

  3. If we are satisfied with "enough" than I guess we could be happy with what we have and not want something we never could have. I can see how this would help yourself feel better, but I don't think this would make someone help people less fortunate. I think wether your fulfilled spiritually or not your going to have the same outlook on helping others.

  4. It's easy to forget about those who don't have even their basic needs met. I get up everyday from a warm bed, put on comfortable clothes, eat a good breakfast, and go off to a good school. It never crosses my mind that I would ever not have whatever I need. My parents make sure of that. I feel guilty that there are people that don't have any of these things and I think that is unfair to them. How can I make a difference? I struggle with the answer to this.

  5. It is our responsibility to help the poor and the hungry becasue being a good Christian means always having open arms to the needy.

  6. It is our resposibility to help people in need because we are very fotunate, unlike many people. We should use our resources that we can get, that others can't, and help them in any way we can.

  8. Everyone has to pitch in to help the less fortunate. They sometimes don't even have enough food to make it through the week, so as Christians, it's is our jobs to help the poor on as global scale.

  9. Helping the poor is our responsibility because we have "enough" to be satisfied, and they need our help to get by.

  11. I know it is kinda late for this one, but when I was writing to my Compassion International sponsered kid, I thought about this and the retreat. It made me think about how lucky we are and should help people in need. By writing letters and giving money every month to Compassion, we offer spritual and monetary gifts to people who need it. I think that everyone should find a way to help out whether it is vollunteering locally or globally. It can help someones life, like the Nothing But Nets program. I don't know if I have said this Melissa but I learned a lot about "being the change" on the retreat, so thank you =]

  12. Cailyn,
Thanks for sharing. I'm glad that you have been so inspired by learning about ways to "be the change." My prayer is that you continue to be motivated to help those less fortunate than ourselves!

PS I think you're pretty awesome! I have no doubt that you will do everything you can to help anyone who needs help! Don't stop smiling!

  13. Like Tori said, we need to help the less-fortunate. We are lucky to live in such a great area, and we are used to things getting literally handed to us. In that respect, it is our job to help people in need.

  14. Sorry this is so late. I'm trying to post on all of the blogs that I didn't get to when I had lost the URL.

I agree with Tyler in that we need to help the less fortunate, but I think instead of thinking of just the people in other countries, that we should think about the people in our country first.

  15. Having enought means being grateful for what we have that we need and not always wanting more. This helps us spiritually becasue we are saying I have what God gave me and i don't need more. With the issue of poverty and more global problems,we have to help others, even in small ways, because it is our duty to make a difference any way that we can.

  16. To me enought is just being happy with what you got and that your healthy and strong. We do need to help the less fortunate because they can't say that they have enought or even close to it so its are job to donate food and money for vaccines so the people and afica and around the world to say that i have enough. That way everyone is equal and no one is suffering, that would make a perfect world.

  17. I think that we should help the people around us because you never know, we might need help later on in our life. I help the less fortunate as much as I can. Whenever I see a food drive, I always bring a bunch of food. I donate my clothes that don't fit me anymore to charity. I think if everyone tries to help, we can make a huge difference in the world.

  18. Once agian, i really feel deeply about helping the less fortunate. I try and do everything I can to help people, no matter what they are like. I think that is my spiritual gift. I thought about this during youth group on Wednsday, and I love to help people. I try and give to people who are less fortunate, and do compassion international. I love recieving letters from my sponser child. He is so grateful to recieve letters offering spirtual help, and the money that we send to help him buy clothes. I just read that book we got during the winter retreat and it touched my heart. I look foreward to keep giving, and hope I can work more in the future. =]

  19. I think that we should do what ever we can in our power to help the poor and the hungry. Wether it be to give money, or to feed them ourselves (such as soup kitchens). We can also build house's for the poor. I would like to work in Soup Kitchens more often, and when I get a job over the summer, I will donate some of my money to the church or organizations that help the poor and hungry.

  20. I think service is why it is our responsibility to do what we can to help the poor and the hungry. We talked a lot about service throughout confirmation. I never thought of service as serving God, I always thought you were serving the person you helped. I remember on the retreat at DPC we talked about how you shouldn't do service to make yourself feel good, that you should do it to help others.
